Interesting Diamonds Facts

Couples will be looking for unique and creative ways to make their proposal rings outstanding. What will be a better option than choosing colored diamonds in order to achieve this appeal? In fact, you can hardly see couples who flaunt beautiful engagement rings with colored diamonds. Speaking of colored diamonds, these are rarest diamond variants that show off a particular body color when viewed from the top. In fact, only 1 out of every 10,000 diamonds mined are colored. This rarity made natural colored diamonds really unique or one-of-a-kind.

Even though you can spot colored diamonds in all the rainbow colors, many studies in the field claim that there are around 27 distinct hues for natural colored diamonds. These vast varieties of colors helped jewelers to name them according to the latest trends such as champagne diamond for brown colored stones, pumpkin diamonds for orange colored ones, canary diamonds for yellow stones, etc.

Furthermore, billions of atoms must bond together to create a diamond and in a colorless stone, all these atoms will be carbon. If the gemstone experiences even a slight quirk in this atomic structure, it can become colored. Additionally, some imperfections during the formation or irradiation process as well can give different body colors to diamonds. If you are wondering about the reason behind different colored diamonds, you may go through the details given below.

Red Diamonds

Red diamonds are the rarest natural colored diamonds and the ones with vivid dark hues can cost you a fortune. The red diamonds are formed as a result of certain imperfections in a diamond’s crystal lattice that occur as a result of extreme stress and pressure subjected to these diamonds during their formation. This will ultimately displace the carbon atoms in the diamond structure making the light entering the stone to transmit red wavelengths of light. If this light transmission is poor, it will create pink diamonds.

Blue Diamonds

Blue diamonds are formed as a result of the presence of boron atoms in the structure of a diamond. Boron minerals are really rare and that makes blue diamonds a rare option. In such diamonds, the number of nitrogen atoms will be really low. Some blue diamonds may attain their color because of a huge concentration of nickel and hydrogen atoms as well.

Green Diamonds

Another rare colored stone that you can consider for your beautiful engagement rings is green diamonds. Even though the presence of a few nickel atoms can turn diamonds green, the potential cause for the formation of green diamonds is the irradiation process. Note that certain diamonds tend to trap the electrons from the nearby rocks during the irradiation process giving it a green surface hue. However, a small amount of natural green hue of diamonds will be lost during their polishing process since only the outer portion of green gemstones will be colored.
